shooting in the west pullman neighborhood. it happened at 120th and eggleston around 2:35 this morning. police think the gunfire came from inside a dark-colored chrysler. 25 year-old quiltavia patterson died at the scene. 38 year-old jermaine carter died at the hospital. patterson had a college degree, had three year-old twins and dreamed of being a rap star. carter was building a tattoo business. >>i was trying to call her ... and he was such a nice guy he would give you the shirt off his back ... a 22year-old woman and a 30year- old man were also shot are in serious condition. police are still searching for the shooter. child welfare authorities are

investigating the death of an 8 month-old boy at his home on the south side. police were called to the home near 63rd and king drive yesterday afternoon. jayshaun strong's body was found in the bathtub and taken to comer children's hospital where he was pronounced dead. dcfs responded in june to allegations of child abuse against jayshaun's father. another child in the home was sent to live with relatives. an autopsy will be preformed today. 30 years after the tylenol killings no one has ever been charged with the crime. now, the sun-times reports a grand jury may be formed to consider evidence in the case. investigators say james lewis remains the prime suspect. he has never been charged with the cyanide poisonings... but spent 13-years in prison for trying to blackmail johnson and johnson company. several potential witnesses have refused to speak to investigators. they could be compelled to testify by a grand jury. in 1982... tylenol killings caused a nationwide scare... and prompted new packaging guidelines for medicine and food. seven chicago area residents died. the owner of an animal shelter will be sentenced today for

cruelty and neglect. dawn hamill had more than 100 animals at the shelter near tinley park. several of the pets were dead, and others lived in terrible filth. hamill said she was overwhelmed when an employee brought twenty animals to the shelter without her permission. she was found guilty of the charges back in september. george ryan will not get out of

flight delays and cancellations. more than 100 flights were canceled monday according to flightstats.com.. bringing the total number of cancellations to 570 since the contract dispute began more than a week ago. less than half of the airline's flights have been on time since september 16th. american won the right to throw out the existing pilots' contract in bankruptcy court... requiring pilots to fly more hours and potentially eliminating their retirement plans. owners of samsung galaxy phones should be cautious of opening web links... or they may have their phones wiped. a security communications researcher demonstrated the handsets' weaknesses at a conference last week. he says the galaxy uses "unstructured supplementary service data" leaving it vulnerable to malicious code embedded in a web page. the code can be used to initiate a reset of the device. simply browsing the web won't cause the reset, but opening a link from an unknown source may. users can minimize their vulnerability by switching off the "service loading" feature.

self-driving cars could soon be on the roads in california. governor jerry brown is expected to sign a bill today making google's driverless car street legal. a bill to allow companies to test the computer-controlled cars on california highways passed overwhelmingly in the state legislature. but the dmv still has to draft rules for public testing. the cars use a combination of video cameras, radar, and lasers to drive in traffic. google says it's driven them over 300 thousand miles in self-driving mode without an accident so far. next: the supreme court may announce as early as today whether it will take up the controversial issue of same-sex marriage. they're already divided -- now a war of words is forcing drew peterson's defense team to become even more fractured. and - some consider him the greatest musician you've never heard of.... at 70 years old sixto rodriguez is finally discovered after so many decades.

the defense team working on drew another member. attorney darryl goldberg has resigned. lead attorney joel brodsy is playing down the team's latest loss... but did write a facebook post about "fighters and quitters." this is the second member of the team to leave. steve greenberg... who openly criticized brodsky during the trial... was fired right after the guilty verdict. there are still four lawyers working on peterson's appeal. he is set to be sentenced on november 26th... but attorneys have until october 12th file a motion requesting to delay the sentencing. peterson faces up to 60-years in prison for murdering his third wife, kathleen savio. he remains the prime suspect in the 2007 disappearnace of his four wife, stacy. the supreme court could announce today whether it will take two same-sex marriage and gay rights cases in its next session. one case involves a new york woman who sued... saying federal law unfairly treats same-sex couples who are lawfully married in their own states. she says she had to pay federal taxes on her wife's estate after she died. at the time, new york didn't recognize their out-of-state marriage. a case in california centers on the state's voter-approved ban on same-sex marriage. if the cases are taken, a ruling wouldn't happen until next year. the u.s. army corps of engineers is not liable for billions of dollars of hurricane katrina flood damage. specifically, in the lower 9th

ward and saint bernard parish. that's what a federal appeals court decided, reversing a decision it made back in march. the appeals court now says the army corps of engineers is immune from damages. it cited a provision that protects a federal agency from lawsuits when it makes a discretionary call. the u.s. postal service's financial situation is looking even grimmer. by sunday, it is required by law to pay the federal government 5.6 billion dollars to fund health care benefits for retirees. but, it doesn't have the money. it will be the second straight time it has defaulted on a payment. for now, the cash shortage won't affect your mail, and the postal services say employees and suppliers will still get paid. he's an american success story who owes that success to fans halfway around the world. as wgn's judie garcia tells us.. sixto rodriguez is gaining some attention stateside now.. thanks to a new documentary.
